BOSTON, Jan. 17 (UPI) -- Zdeno Chara netted three goals and Tim Thomas logged a 31-save shutout Monday in the Boston Bruins' 7-0 rout of Carolina.

Chara's hat trick was the first of his career. Patrice Bergeron added a goal and an assist, while Gregory Campbell, Mark Stuart and Michael Ryder also scored for Boston.

Thomas, meanwhile, collected his NHL-best seventh shutout, helping the Bruins to their fourth win in five games.

Hurricanes goalie Cam Ward was pulled from the net in the first period after yielding two goals on five shots. Justin Peters replaced him and was torched for five scores on 33 shots the rest of the way.
