Def. backs coach Akina returns to Arizona

AUSTIN, Texas, Jan. 17 (UPI) -- University of Texas defensive backs coach Duane Akina says he's leaving for a similar job at the University of Arizona, where he was an assistant for 14 years.

Akina joined theTexas staff in 2001 after leaving Arizona.

With his departure, only three members of coach Mack Brown's 2010 coaching staff will return -- Major Applewhite (running backs and now co-offensive coordinator), Bruce Chambers (tight ends) and Oscar Giles (defensive ends), the Austin American-Statesman reported.

Akina was highly instrumental in the recruitment of four highly touted high school running backs and some wonder if his departure will affect those pledges, the report said.

The names of two possible replacements for Akina have popped up, the newspaper said.

One is Jerry Gray, defensive backs coach for the Seattle Seahawks and the other is Willie Mack Garza, who coaches the secondary for the University of Southern California.
