Astros prospect DeShields in DUI bust

HOUSTON, Jan. 16 (UPI) -- Houston Astros first-round draft choice Delino DeShields Jr. was arrested on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol Sunday, records indicated.

Jail records obtained by MLB.com showed that DeShields Jr., 18, the son of former major leaguer Delino DeShields, was jailed early Sunday in Athens, Ga., after being detained on misdemeanor counts of DUI and possession of alcohol by a minor.

The teenager was released later Sunday after posting $2,500 bond, the Web site said.

The Astros drafted DeShields Jr. with the eighth overall pick last year, giving him a $2.15 million signing bonus. He played in 18 minor league games, hitting .289 in 76 at-bats while being groomed as a second baseman.

His father, who now manages in the Cincinnati Reds organization, was also a second baseman who played from 1990-2002 for the Expos, Dodgers, Cardinals, Orioles and Cubs.

The Astros and DeShields Jr.'s agent declined to comment on the arrest.
