MARIBOUR, Slovenia, Jan. 15 (UPI) -- The women's World Cup giant slalom in Slovenia was canceled Saturday due to warm weather and mushy snow.

The temperature in Maribour was near 60 degrees Fahrenheit, prompting officials to suspend the event after 25 runs, the U.S. Ski Association said in a written statement.

"We knew it was going to be a tough one with the temperature and weather conditions," said U.S. Coach Alex Hoedlmoser. "We are hoping it will get colder so the snow freezes."

Germany's Viktoria Rebensburg was leading when the race was called off. American Lindsey Vonn was in 12th place.

There was no word on whether Sunday's slalom at Maribour would take place as scheduled.
