Simon, Troicki to meet in Sydney finals

SYDNEY, Jan. 14 (UPI) -- No. 4-seeded Victor Troicki and Gilles Simon won in straight sets Friday, earning finals spots in the Medibank International tennis tournament in Sydney.

Troicki got past Florian Mayer 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) and Simon was a 7-6 (7-1), 6-0 winner over third-seeded Ernests Gulbis.

Simon broke a tight match by taking control of the first-set tie-breaker. The only point he lost in the tie-breaker came on a double fault. He lost only three points -- one on a double fault -- in the second set in earning his 10th ATP tournament finals slot. He's won seven championships.

Troicki had 13 aces and four service breaks in his win over Mayer. He had three breaks in the first set and used his fourth to get into the match-ending tie-breaker.

Simon has won all four of his career matches against Troicki, who is 1-2 in tournament title matches.

Saturday's final will be worth $77,000 for the winner while the runner-up will take home $40,500. Gulbis and Mayer each collected $21,950 as semifinalists.
