NHL: Montreal 2, New York Rangers 1

NEW YORK, Jan. 11 (UPI) -- Benoit Pouliot got the go-ahead goal in the third period Tuesday and the Montreal Canadiens hung on to register a 2-1 decision over the New York Rangers.

Pouliot's tally 6 minutes into the final frame, his ninth of the year overall, broke a 1-1 tie and handed the Habs their third straight win.

Jaroslav Spacek scored Alex Auld made 25 saves for the Canadiens, who remained two points behind Boston in the Northeast Division.

The Rangers' only goal came from Brandon Dubinsky and Henrik Lundqvist turned aside 36 shots.
