DETROIT, Jan. 10 (UPI) -- Louisiana State football Coach Les Miles said Monday he'll meet with University of Michigan officials about the Wolverines' vacant head coaching job.

Miles, answering speculation that he's the top candidate for the Michigan spot in the wake of last week's firing of Rich Rodriguez, confirmed in a prepared statement that a meeting will happen.

"I'm told that we will speak," said Miles, a former player and offensive line coach for the Wolverines. "That time and place has not been identified. It's hard for me to speculate on the substance of that meeting."

The Detroit Free Press, citing an unnamed "person with knowledge of the meeting," said it will happen Tuesday when Miles is scheduled to be in Dallas for the American Football Coaches Association's annual convention.

Miles led LSU to the 2007 national championship and his team beat Texas A&M 41-24 in the Cotton Bowl Friday.

Rodriguez was fired Wednesday after going 15-22 in three seasons as the Wolverines' mentor.

A Detroit News report said Miles was believed to be the "strongest candidate" for the job and the Free Press also speculated that Miles could be on Athletic Director Dave Brandon's list of candidates.

Brandon said last week money isn't an issue for Michigan in its search for a new coach.

"I just want you to know, that Michigan, when you look at our compensation packages for our head football coach, we've traditionally been in kind of the middle of the pack," Brandon said. "And I don't necessarily believe that's appropriate. My point is, there's a market out there and you pay for value and the marketplace dictates what those price tags are."
