Flames' Kostopoulos suspended six games

NEW YORK, Jan. 9 (UPI) -- Calgary Flames forward Tom Kostopoulos has been suspended for six games after delivering a hit to the head of an opponent, the NHL said Sunday.

Kostopoulos broke the jaw of Detroit Red Wings defenseman Brad Stuart in the third period of Friday's 5-4 overtime loss to the Wings. He was assessed only a minor penalty for roughing at the time.

Stuart will be out 6-to-8 weeks while recovering from the blow.

Kostopoulos, a nine-year veteran, will also be docked $29,569 in salary and won't be eligible to return until Calgary plays at Vancouver in a Jan. 22 contest.

He has been assessed 54 minutes in penalties in 42 games with Calgary and Carolina this season while scoring four goals and eight points.
