NHL: N.Y. Islanders 4 Colorado 3 (OT)

DENVER, Jan. 8 (UPI) -- John Tavares scored 3:52 into overtime Saturday, boosting the New York Islanders to their seventh win in nine games, 4-3 over Colorado.

Tavares skated behind the net, reversed course in the corner and moved to the front of the cage where he got the puck up over the glove of Craig Anderson for the game-winner.

The score gave 20-year-old Islanders goalie Kevin Poulin a victory in his first NHL start. He turned aside 34-of-37 shots for the Islanders, who wrapped up a five-game road trip with a 4-1 record.

Jeremy Colliton got his first two goals of the year and Blake Comeau added another for New York.

Milan Hejduk forced overtime by scoring his second goal of the game with 4 seconds left in regulation. David Koci also scored for the Avalanche, who fell to 1-3-1 in their last five games.

Anderson ended with 23 saves for Colorado.
