Kentucky pulled to within 61-59 with 5:04 to play thanks to Doron Lamb's foul shot, but that was as close as the Wildcats got as Thompkins drained a jumper and added a free throw for an eight-point Georgia lead with less than 2 1/2 minutes remaining.
Kentucky (12-3, 0-1) was led by Terrence Jones with 24 points and 10 rebounds but shot only 38 percent from the field.
The Wildcats' loss was their first in eight games.
