LAHAINA, Hawaii, Jan. 7 (UPI) -- Robert Garrigus highlighted another day of low scoring with a 10-under 63 Friday that put him one shot in front midway through the Tournament of Champions.
Garrigus finished 36 holes in the opening event of the PGA Tour season with a 14-under 132 total -- a shot in front of Carl Pettersson and two ahead of Jonathan Byrd. Pettersson and Byrd had shared the 18-hole lead with first-round scores of 66.
Ernie Els, Steve Stricker, Francesco Molinari and defending FedEx Cup champion Jim Furyk were tied for fourth at 136.
There were 14 scores of 68 or better Friday at the Kapalua Resort Plantation Course among the 31 players still competing.
Defending champion Geoff Ogilvy withdrew Thursday with an injured finger and Camilo Villegas was disqualified Friday after it was learned he had committed a rules violation during the first round.
Villegas hit an uphill chip shot at the par-5 15th hole, but the ball failed to reach the green and began rolling back down the slope. As the ball was in motion, Villegas disgustedly swung his club and moved a divot that was in the path of the ball.
Even though the ball would not have come in contact with the divot, the action should have resulted in a two-shot penalty. Because the two shots were not added to his score after the round, Villegas was disqualified for signing an incorrect scorecard.
The infraction was spotted by a television viewer, who called PGA Tour headquarters.
"The rules are the rules," Villegas said. "When something like this happens, it's important to me that you are respectful of the game."
