CHENNAI, India, Jan. 5 (UPI) -- No. 1-seeded Tomas Berdych advanced into the quarterfinals of the Chennai Open tennis tournament in India Wednesday with a straight-set victory.

Berdych rolled through a 6-2, 6-4 win over Ivan Dodig by breaking Dodig's serve four times. He dropped his own serve once but still won 69 percent of the points on serve.

Bjorn Phau collected the lone upset of Wednesday's matches, getting past fourth -seeded Richard Gasquet 1-6, 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-4) in a match that took more than 2 1/2 hours. Both players had a pair of service breaks in each of the last two sets but Phau was able to squeeze through the tie-breakers.

Seventh-seeded Xavier Malisse and Blaz Kavcic advanced to the quarters with identical winning scores of 6-2, 6-2. Neither faced a break point.

Malisse dropped just nine points in eight service games in topping Stephane Robert while Kavcic beat Robert Kendrick by winning as many point off Kendrick's serve as Kendrick did.
