Report: Rodriguez out at Michigan

ANN ARBOR, Mich., Jan. 4 (UPI) -- The University of Michigan Tuesday denied a report that Athletic Director Dave Brandon has decided to fire football Coach Rick Rodriguez.

The Detroit Free Press reported Brandon had already made his decision but the school released a statement saying no decision had been made, The Washington Post reported.

"This is media speculation at this point the definitive voice on this matter is [Athletic Director] Dave Brandon and he has not and will not speak publicly until a final decision has been made," the statement said.

A Michigan spokesman said the two men were meeting during the afternoon, the Free Press said.

Stanford Coach Jim Harbaugh, San Diego State Coach Brady Hoke and LSU Coach Les Miles were among the possible candidates to replace Rodriguez, who spent three seasons directing the Wolverines after being hired away from West Virginia, the newspaper said.

Michigan went 15-22 with a 6-18 Big Ten record and wound up on NCAA probation under Rodriguez, 47.

Rodriguez was given a six-year, $15 million contract when he was hired after Lloyd Carr retired in 2007.
