
PROVIDENCE, R.I., Jan. 4 (UPI) -- Travon Woodall sank a go-ahead 3-pointer with 37 seconds left in the game Tuesday and No. 5 Pittsburgh escaped with an 83-79 decision over Providence.
The Panthers (14-1, 2-0 Big East) trailed by three with 1 1/2 minutes left when Gary McGhee made a lay-in and the Friars' Gerard Coleman turned the ball over.
Woodall then made Providence pay with the go-ahead trey and Pittsburgh hung on for the victory.
Gilbert Brown scored 19 points off the bench, going 7-of-8 from the field, McGhee added 13 with nine rebounds and Nasir Robinson chipped in with 11 for the Panthers, who beat Providence for the 10th time in 11 meetings.
Marshon Brooks led the Friars (11-5, 0-3) with 28 points and six rebounds and Vincent Council chipped in with 13 points and 10 assists.
