GAINESVILLE, Fla., Jan. 3 (UPI) -- Charlie Weis is leaving the Kansas City Chiefs staff to become offensive coordinator at Florida, Gators Coach Will Muschamp said Monday.
Weis helped Kansas City to the AFC West title after being fired by Notre Dame, where he was 35-27 in five seasons as head coach. He won't leave the Chiefs until they complete their playoff run.
Weis cited family reasons for moving to Florida.
"Charlie was a perfect fit for what I was looking for in an offensive coordinator," Muschamp said. "He has both college and pro experience and has been a play-caller in the NFL. He has four Super Bowl rings and his accomplishments and his ability to develop quarterbacks speak for themselves."
Weis, 54, was on the staff of the New York Giants for one Super Bowl win and with New England for three more.
Muschamp, who took over at Florida after Urban Meyer quit for personal reasons, also named Frank Verducci as his offensive line coach/running game coordinator and George Wynn as assistant athletic director for football operations.
Verducci was on Weis's staff at Notre Dame in 2009 following eight seasons coaching in the NFL.
Wynn spent six seasons as assistant athletic director for football operations at Texas.
