Vikings' Asher Allen retires at age 24

RALEIGH, N.C., Jan. 3 (UPI) -- Bryan Allen's long slap shot 1:16 into overtime found the net Monday and handed the Florida Panthers a 4-3 decision over Carolina.
Allen collected the puck along the left boards near the blue line and unleashed a surprise slapper that found its way past Cam Ward for the game-winner.
Cory Stillman added a goal and an assist, Dennis Wideman and Chris Higgins also tallied and Scott Clemmensen made 34 saves for the victors.
The Hurricanes got goals from Zach Boychuk, Zac Dalpe and Jay Harrison in the setback, which snapped a three-game Carolina winning streak.
Ward ended up allowing four goals on 28 shots.
