Vikings' Asher Allen retires at age 24

DENVER, Jan. 2 (UPI) -- Ryan Mathews rushed for 120 yards and Philip Rivers tossed for 313 more Sunday in the San Diego Chargers' 33-28 win over Denver.
Matthews carried the ball 26 times and scored three times in racking up his career-best total. Rivers went 21-of-37 through the air for the Chargers (9-7), who missed the playoffs.
Denver (4-12), meanwhile, stumbled to its sixth loss in seven games to finish the season.
Tim Tebow threw for 205 yards for two touchdowns and ran for a score for the Broncos. Brandon Lloyd hauled down five passes for 73 yards and added a touchdown.
