Vikings' Asher Allen retires at age 24

VILLANOVA, Pa., Dec. 30 (UPI) -- Maalik Wayns hit two free throws with 1 second remaining Thursday to ensure a 78-74 victory for No. 8 Villanova over Temple.
Temple briefly held a three-point lead midway through the second half but Corey Stokes scored 24 points to lead a late Villanova charge.
The Wildcats had a five-point advantage as time wound down before Lavoy Allen gave the Owls a chance by hitting a 3-point shot with 2 seconds to go. Wayns was fouled immediately after the inbounds pass and his free throws clinched the win.
Wayns finished with 21 points in what was the sixth straight win for Villanova (11-1).
Allen paced the Owls (9-3) with 21 points. Temple had a six-game winning streak snapped.
