Vikings' Asher Allen retires at age 24
UNIONDALE, N.Y., Dec. 29 (UPI) -- P.A. Parenteau scored in the fourth shootout round Wednesday and the New York Islanders blanked Sidney Crosby in downing Pittsburgh 2-1.
Crosby's points streak ended at 25 games
It had been the longest such streak in the NHL in 18 years. Mats Sundin, who then played for the Quebec Nordiques, had a point in 30 straight games during the 1992-93 season.
Crosby produced 50 points (26 goals and 24 assists) during his streak, which began Nov. 5. He leads the league with 32 goals and 56 points.
Both teams had two goals during the first three rounds of the shootout and Parenteau opened the fourth with a shot that sailed just under the crossbar past Marc-Andre Fleury.
Rick DiPietro then stopped Mark Letestu to bring the Islanders their fifth win in seven games.
Both regulation goals came in the second period. Josh Bailey scored for the Islanders 34 seconds into the stanza and Chris Conner tied it with 3:27 remaining.
DiPietro made 37 saves to get the win. Fleury stopped 25 shots.
