NEW YORK, Dec. 28 (UPI) -- New York Yankees pitcher Andy Pettitte seems to be "leaning towards retiring," teammate Mark Teixeira said Tuesday.
Teixeira, appearing at an event to help promote Thursday's Pinstripe Bowl college football game at Yankee Stadium, told reporters he has been exchanging text messages with Pettitte this off-season as the 38-year-old left-hander ponders whether to return for a 17th season, ESPN reported.
"I think, like everyone else (thinks), if he's leaning one way, he's probably leaning towards retiring," the New York first baseman said. "I think that's what he's publicly said. It's no secret right now. That's probably where he's leaning. But in a month and a half, a lot can happen."
Pettitte, 38 finished the 2010 season 11-3 with a 3.28 ERA and went 1-1 with a 2.57 ERA in two playoff games.
Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman said this month he believes Pettitte is more likely to retire than return.
