WASHINGTON, Dec. 28 (UPI) -- Jay Beagle and Mike Green scored first-period goals for the Washington Capitals Tuesday, backing Semyon Varlamov's 3-0 shutout of Montreal.
Beagle emerged from the corner, spun around to the right of the net and fired a blind backhander that got past Carey Price with less than 3 minutes to go in the first, breaking a scoreless tie.
Green made it 2-0 Washington with 38 seconds left, receiving a cross-ice pass from Niklas Backstrom and beating Price with a shot to the blocker side.
Varlamov posted his second shutout of the season and fourth of his career, turning aside all 25 shots he faced for the Caps, who beat the Habs in their first meeting since Montreal eliminated Washington last season in the Eastern Conference quarterfinals.
Price made 27 saves for the Canadiens, losers of four in their last five.
