PHILADELPHIA, Dec. 27 (UPI) -- The Philadelphia Eagles said Monday Mayor Michael Nutter is coming in for unfair criticism after the team's Sunday night game was postponed by a blizzard.

Fans and local media blasted Nutter after the game was pushed back to Tuesday night because of a blizzard warning, citing his decision to call a snow emergency well before any snow actually hit the city -- about 6 hours before the contest between the Eagles and the Minnesota Vikings.

Philadelphia eventually received more than a foot of snow and the Eagles released a statement Monday defending the mayor's actions, noting it was the league's decision to postpone the game.

"People are free to have their opinions on whether or not last night's Eagles game should have been postponed," team President Joe Banner said in a statement. "That decision was ultimately made by the NFL. Any criticism of the mayor, who was not involved in this decision, is completely unfair."

The postponement also brought a sharp reaction from Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell, who told WPEN-FM, "My biggest beef is that this is part of what's happened in this country. I think we've become wussies."
