LOS ANGELES, Dec. 22 (UPI) -- Los Angeles Lakers Coach Phil Jackson says the NBA should honor the Christmas holiday and eliminate its traditional slate of Dec. 25 games.
In comments made Tuesday to the Web site FanHouse.com, Jackson said after two decades of coaching in the league, he's had enough of playing games on Christmas Day.
"I don't think anybody should play on Christmas Day," Jackson told the Web site before the NBA champs' game against Milwaukee.
His team will play Saturday against the Miami Heat -- one of five marquee match-ups the league has scheduled on a day in which they largely have the televised sports market to themselves.
But Jackson said the tradition rankles him.
"It used to be Phoenix and LA and New York and Boston and New York or Philly or somebody on the East Coast (on Christmas Day)," Jackson said. "Now, I see they have like six games on Christmas.
"It's like Christian holidays don't mean anything to (the NBA) anymore. You just go out and play and entertain (on) TV. It's really weird."
