NHL: N.Y. Islanders 2, Tampa Bay 1 (OT)

UNIONDALE, N.Y., Dec. 22 (UPI) -- John Tavares scored with 1:37 to go in overtime Wednesday, bringing the New York Islanders a 2-1 victory over Tampa Bay.

The Islanders have produced at least one point in three straight games for the first time since the end of November.

Tavares scooped up a puck that deflected off the skate of a Tampa Bay player in front of the net and flipped it past Dan Ellis for the win.

Ryan Malone scored on the power play for the Lightning in the opening period and P.A. Parenteau tied it with only 17 seconds remaining in the middle stanza.

Dwayne Roloson made 34 saves to get the win. Ellis stopped 26 shots for Tampa Bay.

New York boosted its point total to 20 for the season, tied with New Jersey for fewest in the NHL.
