Craig told reporters he arrived in the city Monday night and has already begun planning the construction of an outdoor rink in the home of football's Pittsburgh Steelers for the NHL Bridgestone Winter Classic, in which the Penguins will meet the Washington Capitals New Year's Day.

Craig said he watched Sunday's Steelers-New York Jets game on television, studying Heinz Field's wind patterns from shots of swirling snow, NHL.com reported.

Actual work on making the ice sheet and the surrounding rink is set to begin Christmas Day, two days after the Steelers wrap up their home schedule with a game against Carolina at the stadium.

"We're hoping that all things considered, Mother Nature will be good to us and we will be making ice by 9 p.m. on Christmas night," Craig told the Web site. "And we'll be building ice from that point on."

Favre not going on IR, could play Sunday

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn., Dec. 21 (UPI) -- Minnesota Vikings quarterback Brett Favre may play again this season despite sustaining a concussion against Chicago, Coach Leslie Frazier said Tuesday.

Favre was hurt in the second quarter of Monday night's 40-14 loss to the Bears when Chicago defensive end Corey Wootton wrapped him up and slammed him to the cold artificial surface of TCF Bank Stadium, knocking him out of the game.

The 41-year-old quarterback landed on his left shoulder, taking another beating after overcoming a sprained right (throwing) shoulder to make a surprise start in the contest.

Frazier told reporters Favre won't go on injured reserve and may yet make an appearance in the Vikes' final two games.

"The fact that Brett was able to play was a miracle in a lot of ways," Frazier said. "He's proven time and again he's capable of coming back and playing."

The Minnesota coach indicated injured star running back Adrian Peterson might play Sunday night against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Donovan rules out return to Everton

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 21 (UPI) -- U.S. soccer star Landon Donovan said Tuesday he will not be returning to Britain's pro ranks with Everton this season, instead opting to rest.

The 28-year-old captain of the Los Angeles Galaxy said he won't make a repeat appearance on loan for Everton despite scoring two goals in 10 games for them last season.

"I feel it is important to continue to rest and recover this off-season as opposed to going on loan," Donovan said in a statement issued by the Galaxy. "I enjoyed my time at Everton last season and still appreciate all the support their fans have given me."

Donovan had an extremely busy and productive year. After scoring the game-winning goal against Algeria in the 2010 FIFA World Cup, he propelled the Galaxy to the MLS Western Conference championship game in November.

In all, he played more than 50 games in 2010 and is now aiming to recuperate and prepare for pre-season training beginning in January, the BBC reported.
