With the score tied 1-1, Richards and Loui Eriksson broke into the Columbus zone. Eriksson fed a pass to Richards who launched a snap shot from the left circle that eluded Mathieu Garon 6:17 into the period.
Richards also scored a power-play goal in the first period, snapping a five-game goal drought, and Kari Lehtonen made 35 saves for the Stars.
Fedor Tyutin got the only goal in Columbus's fourth straight loss and Garon ended by making 21 saves.
