Vikings' Asher Allen retires at age 24

EDMONTON, Alberta, Dec. 17 (UPI) -- Dustin Penner put Edmonton in front with 40 seconds left in the first period Thursday and the Oilers poured it on in the second to defeat Columbus 6-3.
Edmonton produced three goals in the middle stanza to take a 6-2 advantage and send goaltender Steve Mason to the bench. Mason allowed all six goals on 28 shots before being replaced by Mathieu Garon.
Penner's power-play goal was his 10th of the season. Jordan Eberle, Magnus Paajarvi and Sam Gagner all produced second-period goals.
All three Columbus scores came from Kristian Huselius, who completed his hat trick with 1:07 to play in the third.
Nikolai Khabibulin stopped 37-of-40 shots for the victory. Both teams had lost their previous two games.
