BATON ROUGE, La., Dec. 16 (UPI) -- Louisiana State University announced Thursday it would sanction its football program after an investigation showed NCAA rules violations had taken place.
School officials said the violations involved the recruiting of a junior college player in 2009. The player never competed at LSU and the assistant coach involved is no longer at the university.
Other infractions involving telephone calls between administrative staff members and potential players and their parents also took place, it was announced.
LSU said the football program would reduce its number of official recruiting visits for the 2010-11 academic year and would cut its football scholarships by two for the February 2011 signing date.
The results of the investigation have been turned over to the NCAA, which has yet to act on the matter.
"LSU took quick and thorough action when we discovered these violations and we are hopeful the NCAA will ultimately agree with our assessment of this case," LSU Chancellor Michael Martin said.
