Vikings' Asher Allen retires at age 24

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J., Dec. 15 (UPI) -- The knee injury New York Giants receiver Steve Smith suffered this week has knocked him out for the rest of the NFL season, the team announced Wednesday.
Smith will require surgery to repair the knee he injured during the Giants' 21-3 victory over the Minnesota Vikings in Detroit Monday night.
Prior to the Minnesota game, Smith had missed four games with a partially torn pectoral muscle.
Smith has 48 receptions for 529 yards and three touchdowns this year.
The Giants also placed linebacker Clint Sintim (knee) on injured reserve and re-signed defensive end Alex Hall.
New York plays a pivotal game at home against NFC East rival Philadelphia Sunday. Both teams have 9-4 records.
