Biggest hockey crowd sees Michigan win

ANN ARBOR, Mich., Dec. 11 (UPI) -- The biggest crowd ever to watch a hockey game jammed into Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor Saturday to watch Michigan roll over Michigan State 5-0.

A crowd of 113,411 fans witnessed the college event, easily surpassing the former record of 77,083 that watched the International Ice Hockey Federation world championships in Germany this year, NHL.com reported.

The turnout was also the biggest crowd ever to attend an event at the storied outdoor stadium, home of the Michigan Wolverines football team.

The two rival schools have met for an outdoor game before. Michigan State's Spartan Stadium in East Lansing, Mich., hosted that 2001 event, which set a record for the biggest-ever hockey crowd at that time.

The Wolverines got a pair of goals each from Jon Merrill and Carl Hagelin while goalie Shawn Hunwick turned aside all 34 shots he faced, gaining his first shutout of the season for Michigan (10-5-4).

Michigan State fell to 3-9-1 with the loss.
