American Ligety wins giant slalom

VAL D'ISERE, France, Dec. 11 (UPI) -- American Ted Ligety won his second consecutive World Cup giant slalom today by more than 1 second over Norway's Aksel Lund Svindal.

Ligety compiled a two-run time of 2 minutes, 26.26 seconds on the course at Val d'Isere, France, 1.05 seconds faster than the Norwegian.

Ligety, who moved into second in the overall World Cup standings, turned in solid technical performances on the Bellvarde course, which had forced 20 DNFs.

Massimiliano Blardone of Italy placed third with a time of 2:27.47. Switzerland's Carlo Janka placed fourth.
