NAPLES, Fla., Dec. 10 (UPI) -- Defending champions Steve Stricker and Jerry Kelly teamed to shoot a 9-under 63 Friday that gave them the lead after one round of the Shark Shootout.
Dustin Johnson and Ian Poulter, opponents in this year's Ryder Cup, made up a partnership that also had a share of the lead in the three-day event hosted by Greg Norman.
The teams of Mark Calcavecchia-Jeff Overton and Fred Funk-Kenny Perry were tied for third place at 64 while Justin Leonard and Scott Verplank were alone in fifth place with a 66.
The first round at the Tiburon Golf Club was conducted in a modified alternate-shot format. Both players on a team hit a tee shot on every hole and after selecting the best of those shots the teammates took turns hitting the ball until it was holed.
In the second round Saturday, the players will compete in the best-ball format.
Norman is teaming with Matt Kuchar this year and they were in last place among the 12 partnerships, having shot an even-par 72.
