Vikings' Asher Allen retires at age 24
LAWRENCE, Kan., Dec. 10 (UPI) -- The University of Kansas announced Friday the original version of the rules of basketball would be displayed at the school after being purchased at auction.
Dr. James Naismith originated the game in 1891 and wrote out 13 rules that would govern his creation. That manuscript was purchased Friday for $4.33 million in an action conducted by Sotheby's in New York.
The winning bid was made by David and Suzanne Booth of Austin, Texas. David Booth is a graduate of Kansas and plans to display the 119-year-old document at the school.
Naismith was the first basketball coach at Kansas and also served as athletic director.
"We are delighted to learn that David and Suzanne Booth have acquired Naismith's Rules of Basketball, a piece of sports history that is intertwined with the University of Kansas and its storied tradition of basketball excellence," University of Kansas Chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little said.
Naismith created the game of basketball as a winter activity for the members of the YMCA in Springfield, Mass., where he was a physical education instructor.
