NHL: Minnesota 3, Phoenix 2

GLENDALE, Ariz., Dec. 9 (UPI) -- Andrew Brunette's second goal of the game gave Minnesota a two-goal lead midway through the third period Thursday and the Wild went on to edge Phoenix 3-2.

Minnesota ended a five-game losing streak. Phoenix has won only twice in its last six after winning seven in a row.

Brunette and Brent Burns scored in the opening period for a 2-1 Minnesota lead and Brunette added a power-play goal with 9:10 to go in the third.

The Wild protected their two-goal lead until Martin Hanzal scored on the power play with just 59 seconds left in regulation.

Niklas Backstrom got the win by making 33 saves. Ilya Bryzgalov stopped 30-of-33 shots for the Coyotes, who missed a chance to move into a tie with Dallas for the lead in the Pacific Division.
