Vikings' Asher Allen retires at age 24
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla., Dec. 8 (UPI) -- Free-agent first baseman Carlos Pena said Wednesday he's going to the Chicago Cubs for the 2011 season.
MLB.com reported Pena and the Cubs have reached agreement on a one-year contract for $10 million. The deal was worked out during the winter baseball meetings in Florida.
"I think when I looked at all of my options, and the teams that were interested, I just thought this was the perfect fit for me," Pena said.
Pena, 32, hit just .196 last year for Tampa Bay but led the Rays with 28 homers and managed a .325 on-base percentage thanks to 87 walks.
The Cubs are Pena's seventh team since he broke into the majors in 2001 with Texas. He also has made stops in Oakland, Detroit, Boston and the New York Yankees.
An all-star in 2009 and Gold Glove winner in 2008, Pena is a lifetime .241 hitter with 230 home runs and 650 RBI.
