Vikings' Asher Allen retires at age 24

WASHINGTON, Nov. 28 (UPI) -- Alex Ovechkin scored during a shootout Sunday, boosting the Washington Capitals to their third straight win, 3-2 over Carolina.
Ovechkin's goal was the only tally of the shootout. Alexander Semin and Marcus Johansson found the net in regulation for the Capitals.
After Erik Staal scored with 3 seconds left in the game to forge a 2-2 tie, the two teams played a scoreless extra session during which Caps goalie Semyon Varlamov kept his team in it with a nice stop on an Ian White shot.
Ovechkin got the shootout goal when he faked to the forehand and lifted it past Hurricanes goalie Cam Ward.
Varlamov finished up Washington's win by making shootout saves on Jussi Jokinen and Tuomo Ruutu.
