Titans' Young to undergo thumb surgery

NASHVILLE, Nov. 22 (UPI) -- The season is over for Tennessee Titans quarterback Vince Young, who will be put on injured reserve with a thumb injury, head Coach Jeff Fisher said Monday.

Fisher said Young has a torn flexor tendon in his right thumb that requires surgery. The signal-caller sustained the injury during Sunday's loss to the Washington Redskins.

"Our medical staff is recommending surgery ... and that would indicate his season is over. In the next day or so we are going to put him on injured reserve," Fisher said. "Our doctors said ... that it needs to be fixed. So that's what we're going to do based on the recommendation."

Young had been stripped of his starting job by Fisher after the Washington game, reportedly following a verbal altercation between the two in the locker room.

Rookie Rusty Smith is set to assume the Titans' starting quarterback job.

Young was enjoying his best year with a 98.6 quarterback rating in nine games, throwing for 1,255 yards and 10 touchdowns with three interceptions.

Seymour fined for Roethlisberger hit

OAKLAND, Calif., Nov. 22 (UPI) -- Oakland Raiders defensive tackle Richard Seymour has been fined $25,000 for hitting Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, an NFL official said Monday.

League spokesman Corry Rush confirmed Seymour was fined but not suspended for his actions during the Raiders' 35-3 loss to Pittsburgh Sunday, the Oakland Tribune reported.

In the incident, Seymour was scuffling with Pittsburgh guard Chris Kemoeatu when Roethlisberger approached the pair. Seymour pushed his open right hand into the quarterback's face and Roethlisberger fell to the ground.

Seymour was ejected from the game after drawing an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.

The Tribune noted that the Raiders lineman drew two disciplinary fines last year, including a $10,000 assessment for a hit after the whistle against the Cleveland Browns.

Parkinson honors late champ in surf win

HALEIWA, Hawaii, Nov. 22 (UPI) -- Surfer Joel Parkinson says he's taking the memory of the late champion Andy Irons with him as he vies for the Van's Triple Crown title this week in Hawaii.

The Australian is in a good position to contend for the championship of the prestigious event after winning the Reef Hawaiian Pro Sunday on Oahu Island's north shore in his first event since sustaining a foot injury last July.

The second jewel of the Triple Crown -- the O'Neill World Cup of Surfing at Sunset Beach -- begins Wednesday and Parkinson is its defending champ. It is being held only three weeks after the death of three-time world champion Irons, one of Parkinson's closest friends.

"He's part of the ocean now -- he's with us all out in the water," an emotional Parkinson told The Australian after Sunday's win. "That one wave I got out there was definitely for 'A.I.' so thanks bud -- I love you."

Parkinson was dominant in the four-man Reef Hawaiian Pro final, nearly doubling the points total of the runner-up, Hawaii's Joel Centeio.
