NEW YORK, Nov. 22 (UPI) -- Cincinnati first baseman Joey Votto was a near unanimous choice for the National League Most Valuable Player Award, it was announced Monday.
Votto, 27 and having just completed his third full major-league season, claimed 31 of the 32 first-place votes cast by members of the Baseball Writers Association of America. He was second on the other ballot. St. Louis first baseman Albert Pujols, who was the NL MVP in 2008 and 2009, got the other first-place vote.
Votto was seen as having a chance at winning the Triple Crown for much of the season but finished second in the league in batting (.324), third in home runs (37) and third in runs-batted-in (113).
With 31 first-place mentions and one second, Votto totaled 443 points, easily outdistancing Pujols, who had 279 points. Colorado outfielder Carlos Gonzalez was third with 240 points.
Votto is the ninth Cincinnati play to win the Most Valuable Player Award. Ernie Lombardi won in 1938, Bucky Walters took home the award in 1939 and Frank McCormick won in 1940. Frank Robinson was the winner in 1961 and Big Red Machine teammates Johnny Bench (1970, '72), Pete Rose (1973), Joe Morgan (1975-76) and George Foster (1977) took home six in an eight-year span.
