No charges in death of Mets GM's dad

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., Nov. 17 (UPI) -- A Florida driver who hit and killed the father of New York Mets General Manager Sandy Alderson will not be charged, authorities said.

Police say investigators concluded Jeffrey W. Lachance, 21, of St. Petersburg, was not driving recklessly or impaired by drugs or alcohol Saturday night when he hit John L. Alderson, the St. Petersburg Times reported.

"There's no evidence that this young gentleman did anything that would warrant a criminal charge," said St. Petersburg Police spokesman Mike Puetz.

Lachance told investigators he didn't see Alderson.

Alderson, 87, a retired fighter pilot, was crossing a St. Petersburg street when he was hit by Lachance's Jeep, police said.

Traffic investigators are still examining other evidence, such as skid marks, which might show if Lachance was speeding or made an improper lane change, Puetz said.

Such findings might result in a traffic ticket, Puetz said.
