BRIDGETON, N.J., Nov. 16 (UPI) -- Darren Ford, a rising star with the San Francisco Giants, has been charged with faking a robbery to steal from a former employer in his New Jersey hometown.

Cumberland County Prosecutor Howard Shapiro said Ford applied Monday for pretrial intervention, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported. The program, for people without criminal records, would allow him to pay restitution and fines and perform community service, and eventually have his record cleared.

Ford was in Vineland to receive the key to the city.

Last November, Ford was working for a chain of Chevrolet dealerships, the RK Auto Group in Vineland, where his duties included taking cash and checks to the bank. He reported he was robbed at gunpoint of the bank deposit bag, $300 of his own and his cellphone.

In addition to the theft, Ford is charged with filing a false report and obstructing an investigation.

Ford's career took off this year. In March, the center fielder won an award as the best player at the Giants' training camp. He went on to steal 37 bases with the club's Class AA affiliate, the Flying Squirrels in Richmond, Va., and scored the winning run in his first major league game Sept. 1 by stealing home.
