NHL: Phoenix 5, Calgary 4

GLENDALE, Ariz., Nov. 13 (UPI) -- Vernon Fiddler had the first hat trick of his career Friday and the Phoenix Coyotes survived a late Calgary flurry to defeat the Flames 5-4.

Fiddler tied the game at 1-1 with a slapshot 1:34 into the second period and then scored twice in the third to give the Coyotes a 5-2 lead.

The last of those goals was an empty-netter with 1:38 remaining, after which Calgary put two shots past Ilya Bryzgalov in the span of 29 seconds.

The goals for Fiddler were his first of the season. He has scored no more than 11 in a season during his eight-year NHL career.

Phoenix has won two straight after losing three in a row. Bryzgalov made 31 saves.

Miikka Kiprusoff took the loss, stopping 21-of-25 shots.
