BUFFALO, N.Y., Nov. 13 (UPI) -- Thomas Vanek's second goal of the game 4 minutes into overtime Saturday handed the Buffalo Sabres a 3-2 victory over Washington.
Vanek gathered steam at center ice, deked out Washington defender John Carlson and avoided a poke check by Capitals goalie Braden Holtby before flicking the puck into an open net to give the struggling Sabres their first home win of the year.
Vanek also scored on a regulation-time power-play goal. Steve Montador had the other goal for Buffalo, which had started 0-6-1 at home, the team's worst showing since 1993-94.
Ryan Miller stopped 23 shots in his return to the ice after missing six games with a knee injury.
Nicklas Backstrom and Karl Alzner scored and Holtby turned aside 24 shots for the Capitals, who saw their six-game winning streak snapped.
