Vikings' Asher Allen retires at age 24
ANAHEIM, Calif., Nov. 11 (UPI) -- Curtis McElhinney stopped 27 shots and earned the first shutout of his NHL career Wednesday, leading Anaheim to a 1-0 victory over the New York Islanders.
The outstanding goaltending effort sent the Islanders to their eighth straight loss. Anaheim has won five in a row.
McElhinney, playing in his fifth game of the season in relief of Jonas Hiller, had given up five goals in each of his two previous appearances. It was the 44th game of his career, which has spanned four years with Calgary and Anaheim.
The game's only goal came from Saku Koivu 3:40 into the third period. It was his sixth of the season and was scored against Dwayne Roloson, who faced only 14 shots.
New York has been held to two goals or less in its last six games and during its losing streak has been outscored 32-12. The Islanders have not won since Oct. 21.
