Vikings' Asher Allen retires at age 24
LOUISVILLE, Ky., Nov. 6 (UPI) -- Pluck came from last entering the stretch to win Saturday's $1 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf going away.
Soldat was second and Willcox Inn finished third. Rough Sailing fell on the first turn of the 1-mile race. Jockey Rosie Napravnik appeared to have escaped serious injury and the horse was being examined.
Pluck, a Kentucky-bred More Than Ready colt, raced well back in the field and was last as the field turned for home. Asked for run by jockey Garrett Gomez, the colt accelerated between horses, rallied outside the leaders and sailed home first by about 1 1/2 lengths, finishing in 1:36.98.
Owned by Team Valor International and trained by Todd Pletcher, Pluck had won two of his previous four starts, including the Summer Stakes at Woodbine in Canada in his last start.
The victory gave sire More Than Ready, Pletcher and Gomez a sweep of the Breeders' Cup 2-year-old turf events. The same sire, trainer and jockey scored with More Than Real in Friday's Juvenile Fillies Turf.
