Vikings' Asher Allen retires at age 24
COLUMBUS, Ohio, Nov. 6 (UPI) -- Columbus's Brian Carroll missed in the fifth round of a shootout Saturday, handing Colorado a 2-1 win over the Crew and a conference semifinal victory.
Conor Casey's goal in the 84th minute for the Rapids evened the aggregate score of the two-game series 2-2, forcing overtime and eventually the penalty kick shootout.
Colorado converted all five of its kicks but Carroll's fifth shot for Columbus missed over the top of the net, and Colorado advanced to the Eastern Conference final against the San Jose Earthquakes.
Columbus had earlier taken the lead in the series in the 70th minute when Robbie Rogers found the net off a pass from Emmanuel Ekpo,
Eddie Gaven also scored for the Crew in their season-ending loss.
