SHANGHAI, Nov. 5 (UPI) -- Francesco Molinari, despite a pair of bogeys Friday, retained his one-stroke lead halfway through the PGA Tour's WGC-HSBC Champions tournament in Shanghai.

Molinari shot a 2-under 70 in the second round and is at 9-under 135 after 36 holes. Lee Westwood is right behind, however, after also turning in a 70 Friday for a two-round total of 8-under 136.

Ernie Els had the day's best round with eight birdies en route to a 7-under 65. That pulled him into a tie with Jaco Van Zyl (66 Friday) and Richie Ramsey (68) for third place, two strokes behind Molinari. Defending champion Phil Mickelson (71) and Tiger Woods (72) are in the group tied for ninth at 4-under 140.

Molinari was 3-under after eight holes but he had a bogey at the ninth hole and, after two pars, bogeyed No. 12. He made a 5-foot putt at 14 for a birdie to get back to 2-under.

"I played really well the front nine," Molinari said. "I started missing some shots around the ninth, 11th and 12th. It was getting a bit tougher, but I managed to grind.

"I maybe didn't hit the ball as good but I still putted well. I'm happy. Nine-under going into the weekend is a good spot."
