MILWAUKEE, Nov. 4 (UPI) -- Ron Roenicke, former bench coach of the Los Angeles Angels, has been hired to manage the Milwaukee Brewers, the team said Thursday.
The Brewers said Roenicke, 54, signed a two-year contract that includes a club option for the 2013 season. He replaces Ken Macha, who had his 2011 contract option declined. Macha had managed the Brewers for two seasons, including last year when Milwaukee went 77-85.
Roenicke has never before been a major league manager but he amassed a 346-283 record as manager of minor league teams. He's been with the Angels organization 11 seasons, including the last five as Manager Mike Scioscia's bench coach.
"Ron brings to the Brewers the skill set needed to maintain high standards of professional excellence and success," said Brewers General Manager Doug Melvin. "I am extremely confident that he will develop an organizational culture that fosters teamwork. Ron projects self confidence, authority and enthusiasm, which will inspire performance.
"He is a true professional with an extensive background as a player, manager, third-base coach and bench coach. I was very impressed with the number of positive endorsements we received on his behalf."
