BASEL, Switzerland, Nov. 4 (UPI) -- No. 2-seeded Novak Djokovic overcame a tough challenge from Jarkko Nieminen in advancing Thursday to the quarterfinals of the Swiss Indoors tennis tournament.

Djokovic edged Nieminen 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) in a match that took nearly two hours. Djokovic used the only service break of the match to claim the first set and saved two set points in the tie-breaker before winning the final four points and the match.

Fourth-seeded Andy Roddick was a 6-3, 6-4 winner over Andrey Golubev. Roddick had 10 aces and had to deal with only one break point. He won 92 percent of the points when he got his first serve in but only 29 percent off his second serve.

David Nalbandian took a tight 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory over sixth-seeded Marin Cilic. He lost only three points on serve in the third set.

Other second-round results found Radek Stepanek beating Santiago Giraldo 3-6, 6-2, 6-0; and Richard Gasquet defeating Tobias Kamke 6-4, 7-5. Also, Viktor Troicki was given a walk-over win when Paul-Henri Mathieu came up with a knee injury.

Stepanek's win gave him a quarterfinal slot against world No. 2- Roger Federer while the other match Friday in the top half of the bracket has Roddick playing Nalbandian. Djokovic goes against Robin Haase and Gasquet plays Troicki in the bottom half of the draw.
