Vikings' Asher Allen retires at age 24
CALGARY, Alberta, Oct. 31 (UPI) -- Alexander Ovechkin popped in two goals 12 seconds apart Saturday, keying the Washington Capitals' 7-2 rout of Calgary.
Ovechkin scored 3:43 into the second period during a 5-on-3 power play to put the Capitals up 3-1. Then, with Washington still sporting a man advantage, the 25-year-old Russian superstar struck again only 12 seconds later.
The goals were the two quickest of Ovechkin's NHL career, now in its sixth season.
The Flames went on to score four more goals in the second period to turn the game into a rout. Mike Green, Matt Bradley, Alexander Semin and Dave Steckel all found the net in the onslaught.
Nicklas Backstrom had a goal and three assists and Michal Neuvirth made 27 saves for the victors.
The Flames got first-period goals from Curtis Glencross and Olli Jokinen.
Miikka Kiprusoff allowed six goals on 27 shots and Henrik Karlsson let in one Caps score.
