Vikings' Asher Allen retires at age 24
SOTOGRANDE, Spain, Oct. 31 (UPI) -- Graeme McDowell took advantage of his opponents' errors Sunday to win the Andalucia Masters by two strokes despite struggling to a 3-over 74.
McDowell, the reigning U.S. Open champion, finished with a 3-under 281 at Club de Golf Valderrama, two shots better than Damien McGrane (72), Soren Kjeldsen (69) and third-round co-leader Gareth Maybin (76), all of whom finished at 1-under 283.
It was the miscues of others that propelled McDowell to the title. McGrane bogeyed the last two holes to fall out of contention and Maybin bogeyed the 17th to fall two behind. Both he and McDowell bogeyed the last to give McDowell the victory.
Sharing fifth place were Joost Luiten (69) and Thomas Bjorn (72) at even-par 284.
Martin Kaymer failed in a bid to supplant Tiger Woods as the world's No. 1 golfer, shooting a 4-over 75 Sunday to tie for 21st place at plus-seven. That means Lee Westwood instead will overtake Woods in the world rankings.
